Ted Abernathy,
Presenter

Globalization means different things to different places. In some places it means raising whole generations from poverty into a better life. In some places it means having to compete for jobs that were once safe. In North Carolina it means that there are both opportunities and threats and also an imperative to be better informed if you want to win the “Job Wars of the Future.”

Urbanization has been accelerating for almost 100 years and future growth is predicted to concentrate in dense city-states that dominate job growth, innovation, and productivity. How do less urbanized places compete? Are rural communities doomed to economic stagnation and decline or is there a successful path forward?

“Technological unemployment" is one of today's hottest economic topics. What's driving it and how can public policy to address it.From automation, to new apps, to advances in robotics, to emerging AI, to augmented reality, disruptive technologies are currently changing the mix of jobs available in the American workplace. Some predictions suggest that as many as 30% of current jobs will become obsolete in just a decade or two. Technology-driven productivity advances have always raised concerns about rising unemployment and underemployment. Is this time different or is this just one more set of advancements?

Demographics shifts are changing the future of our country. Is North Carolina an outlier or will our state be part of the changes sweeping America? What does it mean to have more senior citizens and fewer younger ones?

The great talent mismatch results in millions of people unable to find a better jobs while simultaneously almost every business struggling to find workers with the right skills. Has the bar for success risen too quickly. Are our education and training systems failing to meet the demand-side demands? How do we quantify credentials and raise productivity?

As our country and state struggle with accelerating change the impacts of future uncertainty is impacting our ability to cope with, and prepare for the future. Understanding more about the trends that seem almost certain can help everyone contribute to more competitive and successful future.
