The Enemy Within:  Why We Don't Learn and What We Can Do About It

What do Frodo Baggins, Luke Skywalker, and you have in common? A dark side. Our worst enemy often comes from within and must be confronted. Otherwise blind spots, weaknesses, and biases will keep us from reaching success.


How do we overcome this inner enemy in business? Though we don’t have magic rings or lightsabers, we can confront our natural biases to unleash the power of learning. In this world, the best learners will win because continuous improvement makes our companies nimble, responsive, and strong in the face of lightning-fast change. But first, we have to get out of our own way.


This discussion will reveal how a few deeply ingrained human tendencies can interfere with learning and how to overcome them. You will discover:

·        The hard-wired traps that prevent learning

·        Ways to learn faster and more effectively

·        How to unleash the power of learning throughout your organization

Speaker Biography:


Brad Staats

Associate Professor, UNC Kenan-Flagler Business School


Brad Staats is an associate professor of operations at the University of North Carolina’s Kenan-Flagler Business School. Brad’s research examines how individuals, teams, and organizations can learn in order to build a competitive advantage and clarifies the conditions under which they learn at their best. His work has received financial support from the National Science Foundation and has been featured in Fast Company, the New Yorker, the Financial Times, NPR, and the Wall Street Journal as well as many top operations and organizational behavior journals. Brad’s awards include the Wickham Skinner Early-Career Research Accomplishments Award from the Production and Operations Management Society and the Poets & Quants award as one of the 40 most outstanding business-school professors under 40 in the world.


Brad received a DBA in technology and operations management and an MBA from Harvard Business School. He received a BS with honors in electrical engineering and a BA with high honors from the University of Texas at Austin. Prior to his academic career, he worked in a leading venture capital firm in the southeastern United States, in investment banking at Goldman Sachs, and in strategic planning at Dell Corporation.
