Topic: Working Strong – Success & Sustainability

Research from the Gallup Organization and the Corporate Leadership Council point out that playing to strengths of employees and deliberately designing HR systems to increase employee engagement are the critical ingredients for sustainable organizational success. Organizations that capitalize on the strengths of their employees are more productive and more customer-focused. They enjoy greater profits than those organizations that continue to view people and their development as problems to be fixed. As HR professionals, we set the pace and as we move forward, talent management really needs to be about managing talent. This program will explore methods that are being used to build strengths-based organizations. Diane Cox will share some ideas, methods, and materials from her work at NovoNordisk in Clayton where she is setting up HR systems that utilize new understandings about the power of positive psychology and Appreciative Inquiry.

This program has been approved for 1 recertification credit hour toward PHR, SPHR and GPHR recertification through the Human Resource Certification Institute (HRCI). Please be sure to note the program ID number on your recertification application form. For more information about certification or recertification, please visit the HRCI homepage at www.hrci.org.

About the Presenter:

A native of Raleigh, North Carolina, Steve Guess is the director of the US Department of Labor's North Carolina office of the Veterans' Employment and Training Service (VETS). He began working in the veterans' employment field with the Employment Security Commission in 1977, then became an assistant director with VETS in 1979, and in 1994, was selected for his current role. If the words "employment" and "veteran" appear anywhere on the same page, he'll tell you they probably have some responsibility for it.

Steve has been credentialed in the HR field, and frequently speaks to various employer groups, veterans service organizations, military personnel and Reserve components, providing technical assistance and training on recruiting, non-discrimination, affirmative action and federal compliance matters. Most recently, Steve and his staff have been heavily involved in briefing members of the National Guard and other Reserve Components on their reemployment rights and job protections as they mobilize and demobilize. Equally important, though, are their efforts to help eliminate homelessness among veterans through Reintegration and Stand Down grants.

Steve is a combat veteran of Vietnam, having served with the 101st Airborne Division. A graduate of North Carolina State University, he and his wife and family live in Cary, NC. Asking to see pictures of his grandson, Zack, will get you bonus points.

Topic: The Seven Principles of Adult Learning

Many HR professionals are responsible for a variety of training and development initiatives within their company or firm. Trainers often rely on the traditional one-sided lecture approach so often used in higher learning institutions. The fact is that adult learners have different learning styles and learning needs. Training programs designed using the seven adult learning principles will help you develop more effective training that will help your people grow their skill sets. Initiatives built on these principles ultimately impact behavior change; they get higher ratings by the participants, and, if tracked properly, demonstrate positive ROI outcomes. As part of the session, participants will:

  • identify their own learning style
  • gain an understanding of the 7 Learning Principles of Adult Learners
  • receive a learning styles self-assessment tool
  • receive a 7 Learning Principles job aid
  • receive a copy of "The 7 Key Principles to Build Your Training Program Around" article by speaker

This program has been approved for 1 recertification credit hour toward PHR, SPHR and GPHR recertification through the Human Resource Certification Institute (HRCI). Topic: The HR Hero's Journey

We are at the crossroad to the future; a critical moment in time where what we do now, as leaders in Human Resources, will contribute to determining America's business fate. This is a journey that requires you to understand our economic, technological, demographic and societal changes. This workshop's learning objectives are:

  • To understand and internalize the economic, technological, demographic and societal challenges our aging, developed nation must meet in the race to the future where younger, hungrier nations are emerging to secure their roles in the new world of work.
  • To identify the business threats and find the opportunities in our multi-generational, multi-ethnic and educationally challenged nation. Threats and opportunities HR leaders must deal with and deal with very soon - or we will all suffer the harsh consequences of waiting too long for too little benefit.
  • To see ourselves as hero's - not just "sitting at the leader's table" but "commanding a presence at the table" if business itself is to succeed. What will it take to be a hero? That's the question that, together, we must answer.

This program has been approved for 3 recertification credit hours toward PHR, SPHR and GPHR recertification through the Human Resource Certification Institute (HRCI). Please be sure to note the program ID number on your recertification application form. For more information about certification or recertification, please visit the HRCI homepage at www.hrci.org.
