To help our members prepare for exams, TSHRM officers a Certification Study Group for both the SHRM and HRCI Certification. This combo class meets for about 8 weeks before the exam period, once in the Spring and once in the Fall. We hold these sessions virtually (through the Zoom platform) to review material, take practice exams, and participate in discussions of the material and real-world applications. An outline of the typical agenda is below and subject to change based on class progress and needs.

TSHRM will be using Anne Bogardus’ PHR/SPHR: Professional in Human Resources Certification Study Guide (4th Edition) as our primary text. Other recommended texts are: PHR Professional in Human Resources (2nd Edition) by Cathy Lee Gibson and SPHR Exam Prep; Senior Professional in Human Resources (2nd Edition) by Larry Phillips.

While the books cover similar material, our groups’ discussions will be drawn from the Bogardus text. All texts are priced at ~$40 individually at Amazon.com. Please have your textbook resources handy during study group sessions as slides and other information will be discussed in class. MATERIALS ARE NOT PROVIDED BY TSHRM; You must purchase your own study materials and have them ready. Each attendee must have an active Gmail email account to access course materials during our sessions.

For more information please reach out to certification@tshrm.com or any of our Certification Chairs.

SHRM Certification Overview (SHRM-CP or SHRM-SCP)

Earning your SHRM-CP or SHRM-SCP credential makes you a recognized expert and leader in the HR field—and a valuable asset to your organization, keeping you and your organization more competitive in today's economy. This professional distinction sets you apart from your colleagues, proving your high level of knowledge and skills. Learn More.

Competency-Based

The profession is no longer just about what you know—facts and figures—but rather how you effectively implement that knowledge in the workplace each and every day. SHRM certification provides you the opportunity to prove not only what you know but also how you can apply that knowledge on the job.

Relevant

SHRM certifications directly link to on-the-job scenarios and realistic work situations, making them the most relevant certifications available for HR professionals. Seventy-five percent of examinees say the SHRM-CP and SHRM-SCP exams are more job-relevant than any other HR certification.

Universally Applicable

HR certification must be as inclusive and diverse as the profession itself. Built upon one comprehensive SHRM Body of Competency and Knowledge™ (SHRM BoCK™), SHRM certification is applicable across industries, geographic borders, job responsibilities and career levels. Whether your organization has a global focus or not, customers and talent can come from anywhere, and a universal set of skills is preferred.

Focused on Advancement

The SHRM-CP and SHRM-SCP credentials are based on the current HR landscape, focusing on the competencies and knowledge HR professionals need to lead in today’s business community. Boost your confidence to take that next step in your HR career or to distinguish yourself in a job search.

HRCI Certification Overview

HRCI certification is a career-long commitment that demonstrates dedication, credibility and a mastery of the principles of human resources to your employers, clients, staff members and professional peers around the globe. Certification attests to the investment you have made in your HR career and holds a recognized place in the profession.

To become certified, you must meet strict professional experience and educational requirements before taking the exam. To remain certified, you must stay current in the HR profession and recertify every three years. You display your certification by putting the credential after your name. Learn More.
